Death risk increased with two blood pressure drugs

According to the new research done in the Intermountain Medical Center heart Institute in Salt Lake City, UT have helped in identifying blood pressure medications that produce results of blood pressure varying in measurements and is associated with better mortality outcome risk.

The two blood pressure medications are alpha blockers and alpha 2 agonists to control their blood pressure but these medications have shown an increased risk of death and increased variation in result outcomes.

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, and there are two numbers used to assess blood pressure: systolic and diastolic. Systolic blood pressure (the top number) is the blood pressure when the heart beats, while diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) is the blood pressure between heartbeats when the heart is at rest. If a person is having hypertension if their systolic blood pressure is 130 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or higher and their diastolic BP is 80 mmHg or higher.

High blood pressure becomes a high-risk factor of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. The new study of the updated guideline has proved the above listed two classes of medication are commonly used to lower the blood pressure are actually linked to higher blood pressure and increased mortality rate. Alpha blockers which include doxazosin mesylate and prazosin hydrochloride — work by dilating the blood vessels.  Alpha-2 agonists, such as methyldopa, work by targeting sympathetic nervous system activity, thereby reducing blood vessel constriction.

Based on the study results, Dr. Clements and colleagues say that these two medications should not be used to treat hypertension. He added up of using the ace inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, and thiazide diuretics are safer treatment options of high blood pressure or hypertension.

Blood pressure measurements depend on the way by which it has to be taken by sitting or laying down position for 15 minutes before measurements. Avoiding stressful situations and using a well-fitting blood pressure cuff may also help. This way of method help in providing a more accurate measure of blood pressure.
